Already many months overdue, another hurdle has been hit. The bus shelters due to be installed at the brand new renovated Ipswich Rail Station forecourt will not be installed until after the General Election! Perhaps, not until the Summer months.

Street lighting, fencing and bus shelters are all pending projects, as the station forecourt remains incomplete and unfinished.

Ben Gummer was able to influence additional trees to be installed along the street edge – despite being half a year behind schedule – but original important elements are tricky to get right. The bus shelters are the same as the ones at Tower Ramparts bus station, isn’t that enough installation experience, or have they found a hiccup? Have they not left enough room for the bus shelters? It wouldn’t surprise me, the bus shelter roofs cannot overhang the road; they have quite a depth. Hopefully the station building isn’t in the way!

Bus shelters will not be installed at Ipswich Station forecourt until June.

Source: Ipswich Star. When will roadworks… finally be totally completed?

the completion of the station forecourt has been put off until June because of problems with getting the bus shelters installed. Street lights and fencing are due to be put in position outside the station towards the end of this month, but the final touches will still have to wait.

oh lol. lets assume their lack of proper planning (they were unable to provide any proper plans to us before work started) has caused this problem with the shelters, either that or Ben’s trees are now in the way.  We all know the pretty pictures they provided are far removed from what’s now been built. That sort of thing is fatal to getting it right first time!

We pay these people to do these jobs and every single time there are problems and delays, how are they to be made accountable for all these cock ups?

or as a friend of mine has just mentioned perhaps they are looking for some decent bus shelters this time that don’t fall apart, have leaky gutters, and roofs that go green, like those at the Old Cattle Market.  Or perhaps the extra cost of Ben’s trees means they have no budget left to complete the works at this time…  what a shambles.. again…

It could well be what I expected… Assuming that they are long enough to cause problems… will the bus shelters fit?

Ipswich Rail Station bus shelter delayed disaster

The bus shelter dimensions are 4127mm long, 3000mm wide and 2700mm high. Three are planned to be joined together at both installation locations – outside the station and on the island pavement near the taxi rank.

By using the photo you originally uploaded, length shouldn’t be a problem… the other dimensions might be. For example, road lane width… the Bus Stop box. 2.5 to 3 metres wide?  Unscientific, but by-eye it might be tricky to get that in on the pavement and you would probably need a minimum of 2 metres clearance for Health & Safety reasons too! Especially that there are doors to retail units accessible behind there.

If this is the case, what are they going to do? Will they get another bus shelter type? Will they keep the original option for the taxi rank? Will they simply forget the idea of bus shelters? What a shambles.

I just noticed your second comment after I posted… interesting how we both used the same word to describe it… shambles.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t just have a few more trees and some more of the slab benching.
