Ipswich Borough Council is tendering out for a consultancy business to report Variable Message Sign opportunities to display available car park spaces information for Crown Car Park on signs around the town. This isn’t a Suffolk County Council Travel Ipswich scheme. Ipswich has been considering similar for decades but for whichever reason never went ahead to install them. With the borough owned bus company losing the Park & Ride contract and plans to rebuild Crown Car Park… are we really going to get them this time round?

IBC/0036: Consultancy Advice for Variable Message Signs

To investigate and report on the available technological options for a Variable Message Sign (VMS) system to give details to the public in real time via on-street signage of the number of free spaces available on selected public car parks at any one time, including any technical issues, costs, advantages and disadvantages. Such a report to also consider the additional options and costs for making such information available to download electronically to mobile devices and applications.

Of some interest is their concept of having a mobile app to provide the information which is a great idea. No doubt some basic “wrapper” app displaying a centrally stored number based on car park space availability would end up costing the taxpayer dearly.

so how are you going to be able to use a mobile phone app as you are driving around looking for a parking space ?  🙂

Pick the phone up, take your concentration off the road, maybe knock down a cyclist or two…

How else? 😀 It is disappointing the council will endorse the current abuse of drivers using their phones to text and make phone calls whilst driving despite it being illegal for quite a while now!

I suppose they expect a passenger to look at it and communicate it to the driver …and will waffle on about Car Sharing…

This said, perhaps the time it is implemented we might all be using driverless cars…

yes, driverless cars will be here before we get all the traffic lights synced and the real time bus info sorted, I have no doubt…

on another topic, of similar ilk, what happened to all the lovely new “Welcome to Ipswich” signs with local landmarks on them we were supposed to be getting?

or are they there and of so little impact I’ve not noticed?

These aren’t the original ones! We were supposed to have Oldest English Town (or similar, quite a claim to fame the oldest continuously inhabited settlement) but the merger with Colchester Museums saw an end to that! I am not defending Colchester’s poor attitude (on the same level as snobby Norfplk people) but I can see why they wouldn’t want to join forces with a nearby town whom is too similar to their “Oldest Recorded Town” title. They could have declined the deal.

The public are lied to saying it requires central government approval, which may be true but other towns have managed similar without decades of struggles.

In 2013, Ipswich Star ran with a campaign of promoting our heritage more… http://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/ipswich-let-s-celebrate-our-unrivalled-history-1-1987634 This is where I differ from anyone in local politics. Waterfront can grow as a separate part of Ipswich just like Cardinal Park etc. I want to see main emphasis on the overall package of our history and heritage including gems such as Ancient House and GWHH.

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 – Sections 64 and 65 (Authorisation of Traffic Signs)

Chelmsford, Leicester and Pembridge have all applied for “Welcome to” signs in recent times.

    • Chelmsford appeared to be submitted on 19th January 2016 and approved by DfT on 5 February 2016
    • Leicester appeared to be submitted on 4th November 2015 and approved by DfT on 10 November 2015
    • Pembridge appeared to be submitted on 27th May 2014 and approved by DfT on 10 June 2014

Rather fast turnarounds! Suffolk County Council could not have submitted them!
