Suffolk County Council has had to resort to relaying results on twitter as their crap web infrastructure failed to work. The Ireland based Microsoft Azure hosted platform incorrectly configured and using Microsoft-IIS/8.0 couldn’t handle the hits. It gave my computer 6 cookies… but the results are to be the same for everyone! WTF?

The fundamental purpose why Cloud hosting is so favoured is the ability to upscale in short periods of time. For example, to meet demand you can multiply your infrastructure for just an hour to cope. You don’t need to buy, lease or rent new servers and wait for them to be installed.

There are only 63 pieces of information to be displayed. This is 64 versions of the website (one being “awaiting results”). The information coming across is candidate names, parties and seats. Basic text information. The overhead of a typical webpage is several fold of what this needs to be. Utilising CSS styling and fancy javascript on a CDN (i.e. load once, cached and not on the same server) it can be made pretty.

I would have used nginx to provide the information as simple as possible as a static webpage, load all styling, graphics and scripts from a CDN (separate location) and simply refresh/reset the static page every time an update comes in to which AJAX could do client-side (browser) without user having to refresh. I am sure the website would have remained available without these problems. A $5 digitalocean cloud droplet probably could have done it… bloody amateurs!

Suffolk County Council even tweeting ahead of time….

    As of 14:15… (at 14:10)

Why are they holding back results before they are announced?

Added: As of 14:15, I still see 54/63 on the SCC Elections website… but at least it is working (sort of)!
