Word on the Street: What do you think about the new jobs at the former sugar beet factory?.

why? new jobs, surely can only be a good thing, why go ask people about that!

meanwhile I think you will find a lot of the locals are up in arms about the proposals for the site as the original outline application makes mention of some very tall buildings and the detailed application for the distribution centre that's now been submitted is even taller, and not doing much for the views of those in Sproughton and Elton Park Hadleigh Road.

This is the problem... it is just 200 jobs. 200 jobs is 200 jobs, but when we factor in the size of the plot (I have already overused the comparison between Grafton Way 700 jobs and Sproughton Enterprise Park 200 jobs) and the timescales... of around 10 years, that is - some very simple maths - 20 new jobs per year... nothing special for a town the size of Ipswich and the Greater Ipswich area such as Kesgrave... Home Bargains has created "up to" 50 jobs in Martlesham Heath. A quarter in just one retail unit.

But it is still 200 new jobs? No, not really. When I first looked into it appears they will be relocating from Felixstowe (not sure if there is any truth in this) so it appears not to be 120 new jobs for that warehouse distribution centre at all... and the other 80 jobs is speculative at best, at current.

People lose jobs all the time to redundancies and business closures. Of course there are other employers creating new jobs but to celebrating 20 new jobs a year average on such a large plot of land is concerning and shows signs of more things to come. If we consider the insurance redundancies at Call Connection and the like.

Now it is merely a coincidence that the collapse of Call Connection and Ignition Select lost around 200 jobs in just one year. This is absolutely no gain. I predicted the loss of up to a thousand jobs in Greater Ipswich by the end of the tax year. With HMV, Toys R Us, Wilko and Mothercare struggling - this could well be the case. Things do look promising at the moment but we may need to factor in the decline/vacancies in NHS jobs too.

Sproughton Enterprise Park is a joke. They don't have the infrastructure and they plan to "upgrade" by having a bridge built to Church Lane (connected to Hadleigh Road) and Elton Park Industrial private road (opposite Lavenham Road, on to Hadleigh Road, houses being built near there too).
