With the growth of retail parks in the Greater Ipswich area including Martlesham Heath Retail Park to the North East of Ipswich and East of Kesgrave, do we need a Northern Bypass to support the development?We shouldn't forget that Martlesham Heath is a village built not so long ago on an old RAF base - and the industrial retail units in Beardmore Park were pretty bad and run down until rather recently. There was no Next - it was Focus DIY. No M&S, Pets at Home, Hobbycraft, or Poundland. These bigger names attract much more people than Focus and Bennetts.Within 100 metres of Martlesham Heath Retail Park there is an industrial estate, a Park & Ride site and a Tesco supermarket. On top of this is a fuel station and takeaway outlets including KFC and Greggs. Not to forget Adastral Park down the road - and Martlesham Heath itself to the west.People will be travelling from all over Ipswich to come here which generally means Main Road Kesgrave (A1214) or Foxhall Road. What happens with more housing growth including on St Clements site?A similar story for the retail park growth around North West Ipswich. Both retail parks are to the north of either side of the Ipswich urban area. A Northern Bypass may increase the journey distance, but it will be quicker and less pollution for residents leaving near the existing roads.The Northern Bypass will act as a vital link - an Ipswich orbital - which will help the out-of-town retail parks... it will also support the town centre by reducing unnecessary traffic causing unnecessary congestion!
