What was once a very visible presence in the high street as a replacement for the police, is getting a rarer sight. There used to be a team of 5 street rangers walking the streets of Ipswich six days a week.

The above photo of around the time of the new uniform being introduced.

On the Ipswich Central website it appears to have gone down to 4.

However, Geri has left and it isn't known if she will have her position replaced or whether this is reducing down to 3.

The job has evolved into less tourism and town representative territory into more crime fighting and dealing with the rough sleepers and street drinkers... this required them to wear stab vests and CCTV for protection. What is noticeable is the two women in the street rangers have now left.

I was in town for two hours taking photos of A-Boards and the like... I only saw one Street Ranger for my whole town centre experience, and that was just briefly.
    • Are the hours being reduced?
    • Are they spending more time inside shops than outside on the streets?
    • Do they still work 6 days per week?
    • Are they full time?
    • Are they doing too much security guard or police activity (rent-a-cop)?
