I think there are three layers to this all...
    1. Poor infrastructure (less supply)
    2. Endless roadworks (reduced capacity)
    3. Increasing housing and enterprise (more demand)
I keep telling people "you haven't seen nothing yet"... wait for Adastral Park, Northern Fringe, Wolsey Grange, town centre housing, and the housing they want to build around the A14 and A12 corridor. Then wait for SnOasis if it gets the go ahead!

Housing doesn't happen overnight but the Northern Fringe and Adastral Park projects have been in the planning for decades, so when they finally begin... you will know it.

If the whole London Road debacle (important arterial route in and close to A1214 - why not a Retail Park and Supermarket on such a junction with Handford Road?! Why not add on fastfood and a pub/hotel to the main junction along?! ) didn't teach planners anything... Grafton Way housing and restaurants will stick greater demand on Grafton Way AND Bridge Street with that exit... similar story with Enterprise Island's housing.... East Ipswich is beginning to experience it with the St Clements homes.

It is a great shame. Ipswich offers best of both worlds of an urban environment surrounded by beautiful countryside... yet the traffic situation escapes the latter fact.

Welcome to Ipswich. Another day... Rush hour traffic should be tailing off by now. A crash on the A12... but look at the orange and red... Wherstead Road for the roadworks... same with Norwich Road... look at Kesgrave Main Road, Colchester Road, Bixley Road, Felixstowe Road, London Road... Ransomes Europark surrounding roads struggling... Nacton Road "improvements" aren't helping either.

We have to be careful how we understand Google's traffic layer... as I understand it this data is from those who subscribe to location sharing with an active mobile internet connection to relay it. I have been in traffic jams before that barely registered on the map... I assume as people didn't have their 3G/4G connection on or GPS enabled, that they had no data source to go by... there must also be a minimum number before Google decides it is a delay.

Update: The following image is of 09:30. Did everyone wake up late today? lol

It looks as though traffic is starting to queue on the J56 sliproad eastbound into Ipswich (Wherstead Road TTL). Heavy traffic around Sproughton. Still congested on Bixley Road A1189. Just wait for the roundabout works...
