Ipswich will suffer an array of roadworks causing severe traffic congestion and traffic nightmare in the new year. If you rely on public transport you might as well seek alternatives. If you drive, allow plenty more time to get to work.

It kicks off on Monday 8th January 2018. Ipswich's section of Foxhall Road will be closed from Pearson Road whilst Suffolk County Council/Suffolk Highways tweak the roundabout. The other three exits (other side of Foxhall Road, Heath Road and Bixley Road) will be under traffic signal control. This is due to complete on 4 March 2018. Absolute mayhem at rush hour!

On the same day, Suffolk County Council/Suffolk Highways are going to be tweaking the Maryon Road/Nacton Road junction. It is highly likely the same pool of staff in whole or part will be shared across this and the Foxhall Road works. Lane closures and temporary traffic lights are expected here. It might be a minor inconvenience or it could be a complete disaster. No fun if you work on Ransomes Europark or Futura Park. This is due to complete on 2 March 2018.

Also starting on the same day, is gas main replacement in Norwich Road (just past the railway bridge) of one lane closure with temporary traffic lights. Without a Northern Bypass, police will either be rat running through the estates to get across town or using the A14. The gas main replacement is due to complete on 12 February 2018.

In addition, on the same day, on Wherstead Road (A137) BT are digging up the road so temporary traffic lights will also be operational. This is due to complete on the 10 January 2018.

A day later, on Tuesday 9th January 2018, BT are closing a lane on Ransomes Way (A1189). This is due to complete on the 10 January 2018.

On Wednesday 10th January 2018, a fire hydrant is being replaced on Bramford Road resulting in the need for temporary traffic lights. This won't help with being an alternative route to the Norwich Road works. (This might be an error in the listing). This is due to complete on the 12 January 2018.

On this day there is also planned gas works on Spring Road. Temporary traffic lights. This is due to complete on the 12 January 2018.

On Thursday 11th January 2018, Anglia Water are digging up the road in St Matthews Street (the western near-Norwich Road end). Temporary traffic lights will be in operational. This is due to complete 15 January 2018.

On Monday 15th January 2018, Gippeswyk Avenue will be controlled by temporary traffic lights as Virgin Media digs up the road to install FTTC. This is due to be completed 17 January 2018.

Also on this day Suffolk County Council (Suffolk Highways) are closing The Strand for repairs. This is due to be completed 17 January 2018.

In addition, Woodbridge Road (A1071) near Regent Theatre will have a lane closure (like the last few months). This is due to be completed 17 January 2018.

On Tuesday 16th January 2018, St Helens Street will have temporary traffic lights whilst water pipes are repaired/installed. This is due to be completed 18 January 2018.

On Monday 22nd January 2018, T-mobile are closing a lane of The Havens roundabout (Nacton Road) for access. This is due to be complete the same day.

On Tuesday 30th January 2018, Suffolk County Council/Suffolk Highways are closing Yarmouth Road (A1214) for drainage inspection. This is due to be completed 31 January 2018.

Also, on the same day, Suffolk County Council/Suffolk Highways are closing Museum Street. This will increase traffic on the top part of Civic Drive and block the roundabout with Handford Road which will be really busy with the Yarmouth Road closure. This is due to be completed 1 February 2018.

Please Note: These are all scheduled works which may change. Likewise roadworks may overrun.

It doesn't really improve as the year goes on... in March it steps up a gear.

On Monday 5th March 2018, Suffolk Highways will focus its attention on the Felixstowe Road (St Augustines) roundabout. All four exit will be subject to temporary traffic light control. Three extremely busy roads. The works are not due to be complete until 31 August 2018.

On Saturday 10th March 2018, Dogs Head Street will be closed for gas main replacement. This is a vital part of the "bus loop" and will heavily impact public transport (not like the other roadworks won't!) This is due to be completed on 13 April 2018.

So enjoy your festive holidays, next year appears to be more of the same... and I am not expecting Suffolk Highways to complete either 4 projects on time (Nacton Road, Foxhall Road, Felixstowe Road, Yarmouth Road).

I have a flying bike... More chance of this then Ipswich ever being free from roadworks and improved infrastructure!

Although Sandy Martin appears to have Twitter-promised looking into a rail platform for the Felixstowe line to reduce congestion in South East Ipswich.

I can't see it happening as the funding will be an issue. I cannot see SCC lending the money to build it (council responsible for transport). It is an obvious addition I have been talking about nonstop over the last 10 years... not even identified as a potential solution...

The Bramford Road (east, junction with Norwich Road) closure appears to be continuing until 31 January 2018 with scaffolding licence to the 7 February 2018. It isn't currently known whether this will be extended.

It confirms the extra difficulties this will cause along with:-
        • Norwich Road gas works
        • St Matthew Street temporary traffic lights
        • Bramford Road (further west) fire hydrant replacement
        • Yarmouth Road closure (2 days) drainage inspection
Foxhall Road roundabout works have been pushed back (it appears) to 5 February 2018 to 20 April 2018. How on earth are you able to plan anything when they change it with 2 weeks notice?

There also appears to be additional work on Bixley Road (Chilton Road) between 22 Jan 2018 to 10 Feb 2018
It therefore appears that both roundabouts on the A1189 will have a period where both are being worked on simultaneously. This is absolute madness and unacceptable, although Felixstowe Road roundabout works might be pushed back.

Could you believe it? The latest information on Suffolk County Council website specifies the work has been pushed forward 2 weeks to the 22nd January 2018. The works will create an additional lane for the roundabout for Heath Road and Bixley Road. Will be a slight improvement but not worth the disruption.

More on this specific works here... Junction improvements on Foxhall Road and Heath Road Ipswich

Unfortunately this thread is a bit pointless now with all the changing of dates, I am not even sure if the works due to start the following week aren't going to be pushed back again. No chance of preplanning in this town.
