Ipswich Society: More Maritime Festival Please!

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityAug 23, 2017 at 3:59 PM with 0 replies and 7 views.

Reading a post from the Ipswich Society facebook with the following Ipswich Star article posted What Would You Like To See At Ipswich Maritime Festival If It Returns Next Year? raised some very interesting comments of future suggestions plus criticisms of the Ipswich Maritime Festival 2017... The reason why I stick more importance to Ipswich Society members (although nothing restricting non-members posting on their facebook page) is they...

20 Positive Reasons To Be Cheerful About Ipswich

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityAug 18, 2017 at 9:05 PM with 1 replies and 13 views.

John Field's (former town centre manager) reasons to be cheerful about Ipswich.1. It has a long and fascinating history, being the oldest continuously-inhabited English town, with over 650 listed buildings – one of the largest concentrations of historic buildings in East Anglia. These include such wonderful examples as Christchurch Mansion, the Ancient House, the Unitarian Meeting House, Isaacs and the large collection of full-blown...

Latest reply: (continued...)11. Although there are some empty shop units in the town centre, we must note that this is happening in all towns and cities throughout the country (and abroad) – in fact, our occupancy rate is slightly better than the average for...

Yes, very representative of eating out in Ipswich.. they have some broken links as well, hmmm...

Latest reply: Some? Every time I go on their website (not often) there is always broken links! You should have seen their old website lol :DI think any website using ASP(X) shouldn't be using jQuery. If directories begin with an uppercase you should keep...

If Our Towns Are To Flourish We Must Rethink What We Want Them To Offer

by martinc in Civic & CommunityAug 17, 2017 with 1 replies and 15 views.

Did you miss this one?If our towns are to flourish we must rethink what we want them to offerBig G says some things up to a point I agree with, shock horror..

Latest reply: I did read it on Ipswich Star but hasn't come through on the feed. Not everything does. I have to admit I am sick of these articles... half of the residents would be able to do something to even partly get out of the mess we are in. The...

    Pot Holes.

by martinc in Civic & CommunityAug 17, 2017 with 1 replies and 15 views.

It's getting really bad. You expect a few bits of poor road here and there, but this morning in a two mile drive from outskirts into town centre i now have to actively steer around 4 significant potholes now that I think could potentially damage the car, would most certainly throw off a cyclist or biker.. Now they have all been marked with spray paint so Highways know about them all. But one of the, actually the hardest to avoid, and it means...

Latest reply: It is a disgrace of the state the roads are in. Suffolk Highways (or to the point Kier) are to blame. Elsewhere, at the station area the roads are being resurfaced multiple times in a few months... Part of this is cosmetic in Burrell Road...

    How Green Are Our Roads?

by martinc in Civic & CommunityAug 13, 2017 with 1 replies and 13 views.

It's great to know that SCC Highways are actively seeking to make all our roads a lot greener again this year. Take a trip along almost any road in Ipswich currently and marvel at the wonderful greening of our environment as the weeds in the road gutters get taller and taller and spread further along each Street. So marvelous are some of those along Colchester Road and Valley Road now that the grass verges have merged in completely with the...

Latest reply: All part of their masterplan. Ipswich is well-averaged, mixed middle class and working class -with quite a chunk of underclass ("chav", street drinkers etc.) , mixed social occupation grades... (of mostly C1C2DE) the Northern Fringe/Ipswich...

    Suffolk Libraries Awarded £704,000 Grant

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityAug 7, 2017 with 0 replies and 13 views.

It isn't all cuts. Suffolk Libraries has been awarded £176,000 a year grant from the Arts Council England as an National Portfolio Organisation to develop arts and culture for young people. This is either a lot of money for a centrally produced project or not so much if spread across all library branches.Arts Council England have announced that Suffolk Libraries will have the status of a National Portfolio Organisation for 2018-2022 and...

    Britain's Crumbling Town Centres

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityAug 2, 2017 with 2 replies and 29 views.

Another interesting post from Ipswich Society's facebook. 218 This photo could have been taken in pretty much any town centre in the UK. Broken and uneven paving spotted with chewing gum , tarmac scars (just out of this view), overflowing litter bin, Poundland, Caffe Nero, SportsDirect and just beyond is Oxfam and "To Let" boards and empty shops.... an empty and closed down 1980's shopping centre is just round the corner. The same old...

Latest reply: Yes, most definitely! I think you are right, must be due to being a terminus and having great ambition.... but don't forget keeping this strictly Suffolk :D and Norwich being an ancient city. Their original terminus for the GEML was called...

Why Did Labour And Unison Wait Until After Two Elections To Save Free Shuttle?

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityJul 21, 2017 with 0 replies and 22 views.

The question asked should be Why was the petition organised after the Suffolk county local election in May and the UK snap general election in June? We had known about the free shuttle being axed and had been very vocal about this on IPSWI and through social media. If we had known, at least one of the Labour councillors (at either council) must have known? Labour wasn't interested in picking up on this at the time - in fact they weren't...

    Ipswich Carnival

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityJul 10, 2017 with 9 replies and 116 views.

Is it time to bring back Ipswich Carnival?30 I felt a part of the community soul got destroyed when it was axed. I know it got brought back briefly unsuccessfully due to the council not wanting it to succeed. Over the years the town has become more diverse, yet we don't have a carnival. Felixstowe Carnival continues strong as does many other places in Suffolk - and indeed other counties nationwide, but why not Ipswich? Even if the...

Latest reply: Don't get me started with the Key Street lane closure! It is necessary, just not for that duration... a month should be adequate for both sides (i.e. 2 weeks each, ideally with a break between doing either side) I would argue it could be done...

    The Easy Hotel, what's happening?

by martinc in Civic & CommunityJun 30, 2017 with 8 replies and 73 views.

The site of the new Easy Hotel in Northgate Street looks to have been abandoned. Someone I know who works adjacent tells me the workers have not been on site for a month or so now. Scaffold was put up and never used, then taken down again, and the office the builders have over the road in the former restaurant hasn't seen any activity in ages.Has the project fallen through?

Latest reply: Yes. I wonder if they had intended to do this originally but felt the planning permission would be turned down? Some developers like getting one foot on the ladder with local planning... It could be the case of no Easy Hotel in Ipswich, if it...

I have linked to to this site a few times but I am now going to create a new post every 2 days on the site. Its only a .wordpress blog, styled like a database/wiki site where posts can be found using categories. I aim to document every large proposal for Ipswich, including the ones that didnt get built, were downsized as well as new proposals. So far I have documented a few proposals but I aim to document every 'large' proposal in Ipswich...

Prosecco Festival is coming to Ipswich

    by dan5 in Civic & CommunityJun 29, 2017 with 4 replies and 65 views.

Are we a town of alcoholics or is the town in desperate need of visitor boosts? So the Prosecco Festival in Ipswich has been announced for November. We have had wine and spirits, beer, gin etc.  I am expecting a Champagne, Whisky, Whiskey, Rum, Brandy, Vodka, Cider, Cognac, Perry, Tequila, Port etc. festival or two to be revealed in the next 24 months.Questions should be raised as to why we are seeing floods of these events. I don't agree...

I see the good old Star is now using disqus for its comments. Good or bad? Not sure myself, may put a few people off..
